Holistic Services gives teen mom vital tools for success
After being expelled from high school and dealing with issues involving drug addiction, Kate began attending Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, which focuses on the individual needs of students who are experiencing challenges.
After helping Kate set goals after the birth of her child, the Lincoln High School staff referred Kate to Children’s Home Society of Washington in Walla Walla to receive guidance from a family advocate and enroll her child in their Early Head Start program.
Early Head Start helps children ages birth to 3 years prepare for kindergarten. The program also provides prenatal support and connects parents to other resources in the community.
“My child is a year old and doing very well,” Kate said. “We both are better and everyone says it shows.”
Children’s Home Society of Washington kept Kate informed of how her child was progressing and helped Kate and her child form a stronger connection.
“I was encouraged to move forward in life, get serious about school, and make healthy choices,” Kate said. “CHSW staff really supported me and helped me every step of the way.”
We offer a holistic approach, which was perfect for Kate. Working with a health coordinator, a nutritionist, a counselor and a family advocate gave Kate the chance to receive guidance on family goals, housing and job opportunities. She now has tools to help her navigate as she progresses in her career and parenting.
Kate was awarded a two-year scholarship at Walla Walla Community College this year to help her with housing, parental support and book fees. She is three years sober and focused on a career in nursing and care giving. She currently has a job at a local nursing home.
Thanks to the support from Children’s Home Society of Washington, Kate discovered her own joy in helping others and giving back. We are so proud of her.
