No one wants to get an eviction notice.
That was exactly the situation Asa found themself in one day when he stepped into our Family Resource Center in their community with an eviction notice from their landlord. Understandably, he was worried about what would happen to his family and didn't know where to turn.
When families face unfair eviction, that's when we can step in and help them find resources to keep their family in safe, secure housing.
That day, Asa sat down with a Family Navigator who listened as he told her about their circumstances. She quickly discovered that the eviction notice Asa received from their landlord wasn’t official. While tenant law isn’t our expertise, our Family Navigator knew just where to turn for help.
Together, they filled out a Tenant Law Center form to request support with legal representation. This turned out to be invaluable.
But the Family Navigator didn’t stop there. Through that initial meeting, she learned Asa’s family could benefit from several other programs and services we offer. Asa left that day with diapers, clothing, and back-to-school supplies for his family. He was also connected with other services offered through the Center and community partners, such as rent and utility assistance as well as referrals to culturally-relevant programs in the community.
Two days before Asa’s family was supposed to be evicted, they received an official notice that rescinded the eviction. Asa was ecstatic! He stopped by the Center to share the good news with the Family Navigator and thank them for taking the time to listen and connect them with so many valuable supports.
Today, Asa and his family continue to have a place to call home and they feel more confident they can overcome any obstacle that comes their way.
